How to get your website into ChatGPT: what to require at delivery

A website that shows up in ChatGPT doesn't need a new optimization service. It needs to be indexed, eligible for a snippet and built to be read. Google's documentation is explicit: there are no additional technical requirements to appear in AI features. The rest comes down to build and content decisions.

The Brazilian digital marketing market has been publishing guides that treat GEO and AEO as a new discipline, with its own service and monthly fee. Six of those pages, published between February and July 2026, were read for this article. All of them answer from outside the website: directories, brand mentions, reviews and continuous content production. None of them says what needs to be inside the delivered website.

Does a website need something new to show up in ChatGPT?

No. Google Search Central, in documentation updated on December 10, 2025, states that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. The same text adds that no specific optimization is needed.

That knocks down the premise that there's a separate AI index you have to get into. The same search ranking systems feed the generated answers. What changes isn't the technical requirement, but the writing discipline and the quality of what was built. Before discussing AI visibility, it's worth settling what the website needs to make explicit before any optimization.

What Google's documentation says about AI features

The same Google Search Central documentation, updated in December 2025, lists the practices that help a page get into AI features. None is exclusive to AI, and all of them are either there or not on the day the website is delivered.

  • Crawling allowed in robots.txt and also by the CDN or hosting.

  • Internal links that make content easy to find within the website.

  • A good page experience.

  • Important content available in text form.

  • Structured data that matches the page's visible text.

  • Business Profile and Merchant Center kept up to date, when the business uses them.

Five of the six items are the responsibility of whoever builds the website, not whoever writes the blog later. That's why the conversation starts with which platform delivers crawlable HTML without extra work.

What should you require at website delivery?

Require five verifiable things on delivery day: robots.txt allowing the crawlers, text present in the served HTML, structured data matching the screen, stable URLs and Search Console connected to the client's account. All of it can be checked in minutes, without hiring an extra service.

  1. Ask for the published website's robots.txt and check that GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are allowed.

  2. Open a page's source code and look for a paragraph of the text. If it isn't there, the content depends on JavaScript.

  3. Ask for the structured data block and check that each field repeats something visible on the page.

  4. Require Search Console verified and handed over in your account, along with the domain.

  5. Ask for the website to be indexed in Bing too, the index used by part of the generated answers.

The list doesn't make the project more expensive when it goes in at the start. It belongs in the same place where pages, timelines and integrations already live, which is the scope these requirements fit into, and it's worth writing it down right in what the vendor needs to know before quoting.

Why does content need to be text in the HTML?

Because the crawler reads the HTML the server delivers, and Google's documentation asks for important content in text form. When the text only exists after JavaScript runs in the browser, the page can be indexed and still arrive empty for whoever reads it by machine.

The check takes a minute: open the published page's source code and look for a paragraph of the article. Websites built in Framer publish static pages, so the text is born in the HTML. On any platform, the test is the same and doesn't depend on a paid tool.

Anyone who already has a website and is switching platforms needs to preserve the URLs that are already crawled today, or risk wiping out the history that supports any future citation.

What does content need in order to be cited?

It needs to carry evidence. The study GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by Aggarwal and other researchers, presented at ACM KDD 2024, measured that targeted content optimization methods increase a source's visibility in generated answers by up to 40%.

The practical takeaway is straightforward. A page that makes claims without showing where the data came from competes with thousands of identical pages. A page with numbers from a named, dated source, an answer at the start of each section and blocks that stand on their own hands the engine exactly the excerpt it needs to clip.

Reviewing what's already published matters as much as publishing something new. A corporate website that only grows in page count, without revising what has aged, piles up material nobody will want to cite.

What doesn't depend on the website, however much you pay

Authority outside the domain. The Pew Research Center survey published on July 22, 2025 showed that Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit are the most cited sources in Google's AI summaries and, on their own, account for 15% of the sources listed.

In the same study, government addresses appear more often in AI summaries than in traditional results: 6% of the sources cited in the summaries were .gov websites. The pattern suggests institutional authority weighs more than the volume of published pages.

None of this can be bought with a website delivery. Mentions on third-party lists, a real presence on video and in communities, and brand history are ongoing work that runs in parallel to the project and never inside it.

How do you measure whether the website shows up in AI answers?

Through Search Console. Google's documentation says websites shown in AI features are included in overall search traffic, appearing in the Performance report under the Web search type. There's no separate AI Overviews report.

The same text notes that clicks from pages with an AI Overview tend to be higher quality, with users spending more time on the website. For a corporate website, that changes what's worth tracking: less session volume, more reading depth and conversations started.

It's worth agreeing on measurement from the start, along with where these decisions fit into the project timeline.

What changes when the click is no longer the prize

The Pew Research Center study followed 900 adults in the United States and 68,879 Google searches in March 2025. With an AI summary on screen, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, versus 15% when there was no summary. Source links inside the summary were clicked on 1% of visits.

For anyone selling high-value services, the consequence is direct. Part of the evaluation now happens before the visit, inside an answer that cites you or cites someone else. The website stops being just a destination and becomes the source the machine reads to build that answer.

When the current website can't play that role, the discussion moves from optimization to rebuilding. The criterion for that shift is in when the problem justifies redoing the whole website.

Common mistakes when trying to show up in ChatGPT

Four mistakes are cheap to fix on delivery day and expensive once the website is live.

  1. Blocking crawlers without knowing it, in robots.txt or at the CDN layer, and finding out months later.

  2. Leaving text dependent on JavaScript, delivering an empty page to whoever reads by machine.

  3. Publishing structured data that doesn't match the visible text, contrary to what Google's documentation asks.

  4. Buying a business listing in an AI engine, which doesn't exist on any of the platforms.

None of these mistakes shows up in a portfolio, and all of them show up in the code. Take the list to the selection conversation, along with what to ask the vendor before signing.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a way to register a company in ChatGPT?

There's no registration, form or payment that enrolls a company in the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini or AI Overviews. What exists is indexed, crawlable content with evidence, plus a consistent presence outside your own website. An offer of direct registration is selling something that isn't available on any platform.

Do I need an llms.txt file on my website?

Google's documentation on AI features doesn't mention llms.txt at any point. The controls it describes are robots.txt, the nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet directives, noindex and Google-Extended. Creating the file costs almost nothing, and it doesn't replace any of those described controls either.

Does structured data make a website show up in AI answers?

Not on its own. Google's documentation treats structured data as an SEO best practice and asks that it match the page's visible text. It serves to describe accurately what's already written on screen, not to declare to the search engine something the reader can't find.

Can you stop artificial intelligence from using your website's content?

Partly. Google's documentation describes nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex to limit what appears from the page in Search, and Google-Extended to limit training and grounding in other systems. Blocking Googlebot in robots.txt removes the page from all of search, not just from AI features.

How long until the website starts showing up in answers?

The platforms don't publish a timeframe. Google's documentation notes that recrawling a page can take from several days to months, depending on how often its systems decide it needs updating. Changes to display controls follow the same pace.
